Join us to either play games like Codename, a virtual scavenger hunt, or “speed date” to connect with and make new friends with your chemistry fellows!

Chempanions Social

Week 2: Wednesday, April 7 at 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Are you already missing your mentors and mentees from the week of Spring Break? That’s okay because our upcoming Chempanions Social event will be a great chance to catch up on how your spring quarter’s going, what y’all did over break, and to socialize over fun games we’ve prepared! This event will be hosted on Zoom and Discord on Wednesday April 7 at 6:30-8:00 pm (links are provided below). Also, everyone is welcome to join no matter if you’re a mentor or mentee, see y’all there!

Lab Tours

Week 3: Wednesday, April 14 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

As a research university, UCSD offers invaluable undergraduate research experiences. To highlight this, ACS-SA is hosting a lab tour that showcases the research across different fields of Chemistry on April 14th, 2021 6:30 – 8:00 PM! Apart from touring different research labs, ACS-SA will also dive into questions like finding research and approaching professors. Be sure to bring all your questions on joining a lab, undergraduate research, and the types of research conducted in the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department! This event will be hosted on Zoom.

Student Faculty Mixer

Week 4: Wednesday, April 21 at 1:00 – 3:00 pm

Did you come to our student faculty mixer last fall and got something meaningful out of it, be it lab opportunity, getting to know the professors better, or just having a good time? Well, even if you missed it, you’re in luck now for a second chance at it because we’re holding a spring student faculty mixer on April 21, 1:00 – 3:00 pm via Zoom! Come out to chat with your favorite professors and learn about their academic career, life experience, as well as research!

Green Chem & Mafia Social

Week 5: Wednesday, April 28 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

As midterms approach, it is important to balance out school and social life and not burn out! Come to the ACS-SA Green Chem & Mafia Night Social on April 28th, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM to de-stress from wave after wave of practice exams and lectures. Aside from playing Mafia, you can also chat with other chemistry peers and relax for a second from all the hard-core academics! This event will be held via Zoom.

Symposium Poster Workshop

Week 6: Wednesday, May 5 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Do you love research but aren’t sure how to communicate your scientific findings to an audience? Then come join us at our symposium poster workshop where Dr. Bussey will address the essential elements of a convincing poster, such as presentation, audience engagement, organization, etc. His presentation will not only guide you in composing a sound poster for your research project that will be presented at Symposium in Week 9, but will also help you enhance your public speaking skills for further academic pursuits. We will also give instructions and answer questions regarding symposium logistics.

Faculty Speaker: Dr. Paesani

Week 7: Wednesday, May 12 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Did you attend our student-faculty mixer and was fascinated with Dr. Paesani’s work at the intersection of quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, and computer science? During week 7, you’ll get a great chance to hear more about it at our faculty speaker event on Wednesday, May 12 at 6:30-8:00 pm. Bring your questions about his research, career, life experience, etc. This event will be hosted on Zoom.

Chemistry of Wine Making

Week 8: Wednesday, May 19 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

The first things that often come to mind when picturing a chemist are beakers, lab coats, and wild experiments . While all those can be true, chemistry can be much closer to us than what you think! For instance, the chemistry of wine making is a very interesting application of chemistry that ties science directly to everyday life! If you’ve ever wondered how wines are designed and produced or how chemistry can be used to synthesize alcohol, join the ACS-SA Chemistry of Wine Making on May 19, 2021 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM! Next time when you see wine, you can also appreciate the science behind its production!

Symposium

Week 9: Thursday, May 27 at 2:30 – 6:00 pm

Looking for an opportunity to enhance your undergraduate research experience by communicating your findings to a welcoming chemistry community? The ACS-SA Symposium this upcoming Spring 2021 is perfect for you! Present your findings via digital poster to fellow undergraduates, faculty judges, and the community at large. This year we are also hosting our very first Symposium Video Competition emphasizing on creativity over competition! We hope to encourage the development of science communication skills, even without a completed research project.

Submit your abstract and sign up for the video competition with the links below! Deadline: May 7, 2021 at 11:59 pm.
