Week 1: Wednesday, March 30th at 6:30pm – 8:30 pm
Welcome back tritons! Kick off spring quarter by coming out to ACS-SA’s welcome back social. During this event, students got the opportunity to reunite with their fellow chemists while dining on some pizza!
Week 2: Wednesday, April 6th at 6:30pm – 8:00 pm
Join us on to hear our faculty speaker, Dr. Yitzhak Tor, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry! He will be joining us to discuss his research interests which include the chemistry and biology of nucleosides, nucleotides and nucleic acids, the discovery of novel RNA-targeting antiviral and antibacterial agents, as well as the development of cellular delivery agents and biomolecular fluorescent probes.
Week 3: Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
During this week we had a special guest speaker all the way from the University of Toronto, Dr. Helen Tran. Dr. Helen Tran discussed her research currently, and enlightened us with her personal experiences in chemistry. Towards the end we had a Q & A for all curious chempeers.
Week 4: Wednesday, April 20th at 6:00 – 9:00 pm
This week ACS-SA hosted its very first in-person study jam of the year! This evening we enjoyed some good food, studied with chemistry buddies, and had a ton of fun playing green chemistry themed jeapordy!
Week 5: Wednesday, April 27th at 5:30 – 7:00 pm
This week included an event collaboration with the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCCHE). We talked about implicit bias, intersectionality, and representation, opening a discussion on race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, and other identities within the chemistry field.
Week 6: Wednesday, May 4th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
This week, ACS-SA had faculty speaker Dr. Itay Budin from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry discuss his research on cell membranes and lipid building blocks! His lab group uses synthetic and systems biology approaches to engineer the molecular processes that occur on the surfaces of cells and their organelles. They are also developing new tools to study membrane lipid composition and applying these discoveries to applications in health and biotechnology.
Week 7: Thursday, May 12th at 4:00 – 7:00 pm
In week 7, we had our biggest event of the year, our annual ACS-SA Research Symposium! Presenters displayed posters of their chemistry and biochemistry research to a panel of judges and other students and faculty that dropped by. After the presentation portion, a keynote speech and awards were presented by Professor Nathan Romero!
Week 8: Wednesday, May 18th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
ACS-SA hosted a board game night in the Natural Sciences Building consisting of board games, jackbox, and card games! This event is BYOBG (bring your own board game!) and included food before hand as well! This was a great night to hang out with peers and de-stress from midterms!
Week 9: Wednesday, May 25th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
This week, we enjoyed food at the 64 fireplace, then walked over to Revelle plaza to paint on canvases! This was a great opportunity to destress after midterms and to have some relaxation before week 10 and finals week arrives!
