Welcome Week

Week 1: Monday, September 27th – Friday, October 1st at 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Welcome tritons! Hopefully you’ve all had a good summer. Welcome week is jam packed with events where you can meet fellow chemists and learn more about   ACS-SA.   

Officer Research Panel

Week 2: Wednesday, October 6th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Research, as daunting as it seems initially, is a great way to enhance one’s undergraduate career. Join the ACS-SA Undergraduate Research Panel to hear about our officers’ research experiences, as well as research opportunities and summer research programs! There will be a presentation along with a panel addressing any questions you may have.

Chempanions Ice Skating

Week 2: Friday, October 8th at 7:20 – 9:20 pm

The beginning of a new quarter can bring on a lot of stress about future due dates and exams so come out and have some fun at our Chempanions Ice Skating event! It’s a great opportunity to get to know your potential mentors and mentees. If you’re interested be sure to fill out our interest form so we can organize rides to and from. The event will take place at UTC Ice and will be $15 per person. Hope to see you there!

Chempanions Speed Dating

Week 3: Wednesday, October 13th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Are you new to UCSD and looking for academic and college advice? Or do you have some insights to share from your experience at UCSD? ACS-SA’s Chempanions program is a peer mentorship program within the chemistry community that allows new and older students to share advice and become friends! Join us at our speed dating event this week to meet different mentors and mentees and find out who you align with the most.

Pumpkin Painting

Week 4: Wednesday, October 20th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Come out to ACS-SA’s social at Matthews Quad to paint pumpkins with us! This week’s event will hopefully act as a destresser to help those who have midterms coming up.

Faculty Speaker: Dr. Dontarie Stallings

Week 5: Wednesday, October 27th at 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Join us on Zoom to hear our faculty speaker, Dr. Dontarie Stallings, Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry! He will be joining us to discuss his research background, the work he performed with the Open Chemistry Collaboration in Diversity Equity (OXIDE) as the associate director, and how he became interested in science policy.

Student-Faculty Mixer

Week 6: Wednesday, November 3rd at 12:00 – 2:00 pm

Due to the pandemic, getting to know professors and faculty members is especially difficult and daunting. But with our Student-Faculty Mixer, interacting and having a personal connection with professors is as easy as joining a Zoom call! Come join the ACS-SA Student-Faculty Mixer for a great opportunity to meet and interact with professors and faculty members in the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department! Bring any questions you may have or just join to chat with professors and faculty members outside of the classroom! This event will be hosted via Zoom.

Chemistry Lab Tours

Week 7: Wednesday, November 10th at 1:00 – 3:00 pm

As a research university, UCSD offers invaluable undergraduate research experiences. To highlight this, ACS-SA is hosting a lab tour that showcases the research across different fields of chemistry, including analytical, inorganic, and biochemistry! Apart from touring different research labs, ACS-SA will also dive into questions like finding research and approaching professors. Be sure to bring all your questions on joining a lab, undergraduate research, and the types of research conducted in the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department! This event will be held on Zoom, find the link on our Facebook page!

Faculty Speaker: Dr. Julia Stauber

Week 8: Wednesday, November 17th at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Ever wonder where a degree in chemistry can take you? Come hear from faculty speaker, Dr. Julia Stauber, Assistant Professor within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and alumni of UCSD! This event will be held on zoom, please go to our Facebook page for the link. We hope you can make it!

Green Chemistry Certification

Week 10: Wednesday, December 1st  at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Where: Natural Sciences Building Atrium and Auditorium (NSB)

Green chemistry may not be the most discussed subject area, however, it’s vital to any chemistry practice. As any good chemist, you should be familiar with green chemistry and its application in the lab. Join us on learning about the process laboratories go through to get green chemistry certified and the value of this certification. This is an in-person event.
