Week 1: Wednesday, October 7 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Don’t let COVID-19 prevent you from meeting members of the Chemistry/Biochemistry community and starting this new year with a BANG! Inviting all members of the Chemistry/Biochemistry community to celebrate the start of the 2020-2021 school year with the ACS-SA’s Virtual Welcome Back Social. Be ready to make lots of new friends, learn more about the ACS-SA organization, and find your community! (This virtual event will be hosted through Zoom!)
Week 1: Friday, October 9 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Transferring can be a difficult transition, especially now that we are going through a pandemic. This doesn’t mean we have to be isolated from the Chemistry/Biochemistry community and other fellow transfer students! Calling out to all Chemistry/Biochemistry transfers – the ACS-SA Transfer Social is a great way to meet new friends who are also interested in Chemistry, share experiences, and find your community! (This event is virtual and will be hosted through Zoom!)
Week 2: Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Craving some social interaction during quarantine? Well, good news for you because this Chempanions Mentor-Mentee Social will definitely get your social life back on track! It’ll be a fun night with a presentation about the program, followed by some mingling time in breakout rooms where you’ll get to sample your potential future mentors/mentees!
Week 3: Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 – 10:00 pm
Social distancing doesn’t mean we have to study in isolation! Join our Study Jam on October 21, Wednesday 7-10:00 p.m. to study with friends who are taking the same class (or not study and just chill). This event will be hosted in our Discord channel!
Week 4: Wednesday, October 28 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
ACS-SA is hosting lab tours for 4 different labs across different fields of Chemistry! Join us on October 28th, Wednesday 6:30-8:30 pm to explore different labs and ask any questions you may have on joining a lab, conducting research, and the types of research that goes on in the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department!
Week 5: Wednesday, November 4 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Come on down, destress, and have some fun with us at ACS-SA playing Among Us. Make friends and then kill them (in Among Us of course) because who needs friends at UCSD when you can have the sweet satisfaction of victory! We can’t wait to vote you out of the airlock (was not an imposter)! See you there on our Discord channel.
Week 6: Friday, November 13 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Join us for a competitive virtual game of Kahoot where we explore the principles of green chemistry. Winners will be given prizes and some sweet sweet bragging rights! So come learn a little and have a good time with your ACS-SA community. See you there!
Week 7: Wednesday, November 18 at 12:00 – 2:00 pm
We have invited a diverse set of professors from the UCSD chemistry department for our ACS-SA Student-Faculty Mixer. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the research going on at UCSD and gain important connections with faculty. COVID has made meeting faculty outside your classes nearly impossible, this event will give you the opportunity to network with faculty you may otherwise not have access to. Take this opportunity to have a virtual lunch and get to know your professors better!
Week 7: Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Join us and Dr. Stacey Brydges, Vice-Chair of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Climate, as we discuss why diversity and inclusion in chemistry are important. This will be an educational and interactive introduction teaching about the benefits a more diverse and inclusive chemistry environment provides. Furthermore, we will learn about ways that you can help push our community towards a better future. Diversity and Inclusion is a major theme of ACS-SA and we are committed to encouraging our community to be informed and motivated to uphold our ideals of Inclusion, equality, and diversity. We are excited to see you at our seminar!
Week 9: Wednesday, December 2 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Not sure which career path fits you in the chemistry field? No concrete plans beyond undergrad education? Or perhaps you may be curious about what it’s like to work in industry. Come out with your questions or concerns to the Industry Panel on Wednesday, December 2nd from 6:30-8:00 pm! Guest speakers include Yongchao Liang from BD Biosciences, Rob Brown from Synthetic Genomics, and UCSD staff scientist Dina Hingorani.
Week 10: Wednesday, December 9 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Stressed out and overwhelmed by the upcoming finals? Yearning for more social interactions during this ongoing pandemic? Come join the ACS-SA Virtual Game Night on December 9th, 2020 from 6:30-8:00 pm for a fun and de-stressing virtual game night! Feel free to participate in the virtual games yourself or just stay to socialize and have a good laugh! This event will be held via the ACS-SA Discord Channel!
