Celebrate the start of a new quarter with ACS-SA’s Welcome Back Social! Catch up with members from last quarter and meet new friends.

Undergraduate Research Panel

Week 2: Wednesday, January 13 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

This week the ACS-SA officer team has put together an undergraduate research panel to talk about their experience working as student researcher at UC San Diego. Our panelists will answer your question about how to get into research, and highlight the many research opportunities available to you during the school year and over the summer.

This event will be hosted via Zoom and requires pre-registration!

Alumni Panel

Week 3: Wednesday, January 20 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Come join the ACS-SA Alumni Panel on January 20th from 6:30-8:00 pm to see what previous chemistry students did after college and where they are now! Drop in and listen to their experiences or bring any questions you may have about life after college or kick starting a successful career!

Jeopardy Game Night

Week 4: Wednesday, January 20 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Midterm season is just around the corner, chemists of UCSD! Study hard but also don’t forget to relax a little so you don’t burn out. Come by our Game Night on Wednesday, January 27th, 6:30 – 8:00 pm (PST) to destress playing Jeopardy! Bring your friends and let’s have a great socially distant time!

Interested in going to graduate school? Do you have questions about graduate school and graduate student life? If so, join ACS-SA for our Graduate Student Panel where you can get all your questions answered.

Faculty Speaker: Dr. Brian Leigh

Week 6: Wednesday, February 10 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

This week the ACS-SA officer team has invited Dr. Brian Leigh, Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, to present on his research background. Dr. Leigh has years of experience as physical chemist working with energetic materials in the forensic science industry.

Chemistry Career Day

Week 7: Wednesday, February 17 at 10:00 am – 12:30 pm

ACS-SA is proud to present Chemistry Career Day, an event to learn about the diverse array of opportunities for chemistry majors in industry. First, hear from company representatives about their journey into industry, what they do, and how you can break into industry. Then, expand your network by speaking face to (virtual) face with the representatives and asking them questions. The companies include Pfizer, General Atomics, and more! The Career Services Center will also be available to review your resume during the event. Reserve your spot ahead of time with this RSVP form!

Bill Nye Watch Party

Week 8: Wednesday, February 24 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Feeling worn out from midterms? Wishing science could be simple and exciting again? Maybe you remember watching Bill Nye in elementary school, laughing, and feeling that magical wonder as you learned about how the world works. ACS-SA hopes you like a dose of nostalgia, as we are hosting a Bill Nye the Science Guy watch party! If you’ve never watched Bill Nye before, this is your chance to, and maybe we will all learn something new.

Faculty Speaker: Dr. Romero

Week 9: Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

This week the ACS-SA officer team has invited Dr. Nathan Romero, Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, to present on his research background. Dr. Romero has years of experience in polymer science and his lab is working to synthesize functional, sustainable polymers which have applications that include energy harvesting, protective equipment, and 3D printing.

Finals Study Jam & De-stress

Week 10: Wednesday, March 10 at 6:30 – 8:00 pm

As Finals Week approaches, classes can get increasingly overwhelming. While studying is important, don’t forget to take breaks and destress from the waves of homework, practice exams, and lectures. Come out to the ACSSA Study Jam & De-stress on March 10th, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00 PM to either continue your academic grind or destress with activities, like yoga and Among Us. During the event, there will be two sessions open: one as a study jam and the other as a destressing social event (Yoga and Among Us!). Both will be held via the ACSSA Discord Channel.
